What is a Calavera?
A calavera poem, is a type of satirical Mexican poetry traditionally written around Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). These short, humorous verses personify death in playful ways, often imagining the subject’s demise or poking fun at their personality, habits, or quirks. Despite their dark theme, calaveras are meant to be lighthearted and are written to honor friends, family members, public figures, or even fictional characters.

Those who never had the chance,
To meet this girl by happenstance,
Missed a time to see the light
Of politically artistic might
She spent her time writing law
Hosting plenty, loving all
Though one sudden, shocking day
She sailed across that dimming bay
Though fought right, true and fair
This cherubic lady of copper hair
Run right through, an opponent’s lance
Now in the after, it’s wide expanse,
So I write to you, my funny friend
I hope you meet her at your end
Though I should warn you of her humor
I promise this is no silly rumor
To the crude, sometimes it slants:
She’ll cake you to your underpants.
